  1. Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP)

  3. Description 
  4. Marxist group that split from the PFLP in 1969.  Believes Palestinian 
  5. national goals can be achieved only through revolution of the masses. 
  6. Opposes the Declaration of Principles (DOP) signed in 1993.  In early 1980s, 
  7. occupied political stance midway between Arafat and the rejectionists. 
  8. Split into two factions in 1991, one pro-Arafat and another more hardline 
  9. faction headed by Nayif Hawatmah (which has suspended participation in the 
  10. PLO).

  14. Activities 
  15. In the 1970s, carried out numerous small bombings and minor assaults and 
  16. some more spectacular operations in Israel and the occupied territories, 
  17. concentrating on Israeli targets such as the 1974 massacre in Malalot in 
  18. which 27 Israelis were killed and more than 100 wounded.  Involved only in 
  19. border raids since 1988.

  22. Estimated at 500 (total for both factions).

  25. Syria, Lebanon, and the Israeli occupied territories; attacks have taken 
  26. place entirely in Israel and the occupied territories.

  29. Receives financial and military aid from Syria and Libya.

  34. MAY, 1974:
  35. TOOK OVER A SCHOOLHOUSE  AND MASSACRED ISRAELI HOSTAGES AFTER
  36. INFILTRATING USING UNIFORMS RESEMBLING THOSE OF THE ISRAEL DEFENSE
  37. FORCES (IDF).  MURDERED 27 AND WOUNDED 124.

  39. NOVEMBER, 1974:
  40. ATTACKED THE TOWN OF BET SHE'AN IN ISRAEL.  THREE TERRORISTS
  41. BARRICADED THEMSELVES IN A BUILDING CARRYING HAND GRENADES AND
  42. KALASHNIKOVS (AK-47).  THEY HAD DEMANDED THE RELEASE OF 15
  43. PALESTINIANS.

  45. JULY, 1977:
  46. IMPLICATED IN SEVERAL TEL AVIV AND JERUSALEM BOMBINGS.
  47. JANUARY, 1979:
  48. ATTEMPTED TO SEIZE 230 CIVILIANS AS HOSTAGES IN A GUEST HOUSE IN
  49. MA'ALOT.  THREE TERRORISTS, ARMED WITH KALASHNIKOVS AND GRENADES,
  50. WERE KILLED BU ISRAELI DEFENSE FORCES (IDF).

  53. CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR PLANTING BOMBS IN ISRAELI BUSES TO
  54. PROTEST PRESIDENT CARTER'S VISIT TO ISRAEL.

  57. CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR A GRENADE ATTACK IN THE GAZA STRIP THAT
  58. KILLED AN ISRAELI SOLDIER AND WOUNDED THREE OTHERS.

  61. CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR A GRENADE EXPLOSION IN JERUSALEM WHICH
  62. WOUNDED TWENTY ONE PERSONS.

  69. INFILTRATE FROM LEBANON INTO ISRAEL, BUT WERE INTERCEPTED BY THE
